Baluster designs vary and are meant to meet safety guardrail code requirements. These codes state that safety height  requirements are 36"H (minimum.) For commercial purposes or balconies 42"H (or higher)-Spacing between balusters should not allow for a 4" sphere to pass through the narrowest point.
